A *hickey* = a bruise caused by suction/kissing hard on the skin.

What’s actually happening
When someone sucks on your skin, small blood vessels called capillaries burst under the surface. Blood leaks out and gets trapped, so it looks red/purple. After a few days it turns blue → green → yellow as your body breaks the blood down. Same process as any bruise.

How long it lasts
Usually *3 days to 2 weeks* depending on:
1. How hard the suction was
2. Your skin tone + how easily you bruise
3. Where it is – neck/chest show more and last longer

Quick ways to make it fade faster
*First 0-24 hours*: Cold compress. Ice pack, cold spoon, or frozen peas for 10 min at a time. Cold constricts blood vessels so less blood leaks out.

*After 24 hours*: Warm compress. Warm washcloth or heating pad 10 min at a time. Heat increases blood flow to help your body reabsorb the trapped blood.

*Other tricks people swear by*:
– *Massage*: Gently rub the area from center outward to break up clotted blood
– *Aloe vera / vitamin K cream*: Helps healing, though evidence is weak
– *Cover it*: Concealer, scarf, collar, hair, or a bandage if you need to hide it fast

Myths that don’t work
Toothpaste, coins, or scraping hard – these just irritate skin more and can make it worse.

*Safety note*: Hickeys are just bruises, so they’re harmless. But don’t do them so hard that skin breaks. And if you’re on blood thinners or bruise super easily, they’ll be bigger and last longer.
